Is all-grain brewing something that interests you, but you just think it may be too much of a hassle?<\/p>\n<p>Then you really should consider the Brew-In-A-Bag (BIAB for short) method of all-grain brewing. Here&#8217;s the web version.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So what&#8217;s Brew-in-a-Bag all about anyway?\u00a0 Looking at homebrewing from the simplest method to the most complicated, it would look something like this:<\/p>\n<p>1.<strong> Extract Brewing<\/strong> &#8211; Using malt extract to create your wort.\u00a0 This is how we all started!<\/p>\n<p>2.<strong> Extract Brewing with Specialty Grains<\/strong> &#8211; Crushed grains are steeped in water using a grain bag.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a lot like making tea.\u00a0 Then, the bag of spent grains are removed and the preliminary wort that is left is where you add the malt extract and additional water required to make the brew volume needed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_441\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-441\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/biabbrewing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/first-grain-addition.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-441\" src=\"https:\/\/biabbrewing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/first-grain-addition-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Adding Grains To The Bag\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biabbrewing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/first-grain-addition-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/biabbrewing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/first-grain-addition-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/biabbrewing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/first-grain-addition.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adding Grains To The Bag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>3.<strong> Brew-in-a-Bag (BIAB)<\/strong> &#8211; This method is basically like steeping specialty grains, but on a larger scale.\u00a0 You also do not add malt extract to make your wort.\u00a0 You use the same grain bill that a traditional all-grain brewer would use, but you add the full volume of water that will be required for the entire brew process right up front.<\/p>\n<p>If you plan on making a typical 5 gallon batch, then you&#8217;ll need a pretty large kettle.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why BIAB is a popular <strong>Small Batch Brewing<\/strong> method (1-3 gallons).\u00a0 You have to take into account that water lost from grain and hop absorption, boil-off, and the trub in the fermenter.<\/p>\n<p>After mashing is complete, when you remove your grain bag, what&#8217;s left is the volume of wort that you will then boil.\u00a0 There is no need to add any additional water as you would have in extract brewing.\u00a0 Simply follow your recipe as before to complete the process.<\/p>\n<p>4.<strong> Conventional All-Grain Brewing<\/strong> &#8211; Don&#8217;t be mistaken &#8211; BIAB is really all-grain\u00a0brewing, but not in the traditional sense.\u00a0 Although there are various ways to brew all-grain (like partial mash and different sparging methods), they require more equipment than any other method.\u00a0 To mash your grains you&#8217;ll need a mash\/lauter tun (picnic coolers are popular for this) and a large sparge water pot to heat your mash and sparge water.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll then need a brew kettle that will hold about 6 gallons of wort while boiling, so probably need about an 8 gallon kettle to avoid boil-over.<\/p>\n<p>So if you haven&#8217;t figured it out yet, this site is all about home brewing using the brew-in-a-bag method, originally developed in Australia.
